There are diamondback terrapins in the area and you can see them swimming in the water in front of the home at times during the year.

In the summer, (typically June and July), you will see the female Diamondbacks come onto the beach, cross the gravel road and on the front, sides and most frequently in the rear. You will then see them dig holes with their hind legs, lay eggs and then cover up the hole before travelling back to the beach and water.
In August and September, the eggs will hatch, and small baby turtles will amble their way to the water, usually the protected wetland in the rear of the home but sometimes the river.

Please observe the turtles and make sure you don’t drive or step on the babies. It is not permitted to handle or collect the baby Diamondbacks in Maryland (other species you are actually permitted to collect and keep in some instances.)
