Heating and Cooling

Our home is a log cabin with multiple ways to cool and heat.

In the Summer

  • Full-house central AC unit that can be controlled by the Ecobee thermostat in the living room. For the heat-pump system to work well, make sure to keep windows and doors closed. On the hottest and most humid days it may struggle to keep up.
  • Ceiling fans throughout the home.
  • The bedrooms have individually controlled mini-splits that will cool down those rooms and areas of the home. The remote control is on the wall of the room. Turn on, set the mini-split to cool mode and set to the desired temperature. You can find the Remote Control Manual here.

In the Winter

  • Full-house central heat that can be controlled by the Ecobee thermostat in the living room. For the heat-pump system to work well, make sure to keep windows and doors closed. On the coldest days it may struggle to keep up.
  • To supplement the central heat, you can run the Pellet Stove in the living room. There is an air-intake in the living room, so the pellet stove heat will somewhat distribute through the home.
  • The bedrooms also have mini-splits that will heat those rooms. The remote control is on the wall of the room. Just turn on the mini-split, set to Heat mode and set the desired temperature. You can find the Remote Control Manual here.
  • Ceiling fans can be used to circulate the warm air throughout the room.

Troubleshooting

System not working/“– –“ showing on split system display

If the split air conditioners come on and then turn off again, it is usually due to the mode on the systems being set differently. All the systems will either have to be in heat or cool mode, even if some are set to off. So, if you turn on a system to COOL and it doesn’t turn off or just displays “- -“ on the front of the unit, one or more of the other units are set to heat. You will have to go to the other rooms and check that they are also all set to COOL on the remotes. This is usually only an issue in fall/spring when guests switch units between heat and cool.
